The History of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton Counties, Pennsylvania with illustrations and biographical sketches of some of the pioneers and prominent men was published in 1884 by Waterman, Watkins and Company. This is one of the earliest county histories for the Pennsylvania counties of Bedford, Somerset and Fulton. Great attention was given to recording the accounts of the early settlers. A history of the region is provided which include chapters on the early provincial times, the French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War and the Civil War which includes lists of soldiers from the three counties.
The chapters on Bedford, Somerset and Fulton counties are quite extensive. Each county section includes chapters on the civil government, the bench and bar, the physicians and the townships and boroughs. Within the chapters on Bedford county there are lists of taxpayers and residences for the following years 1772, 1796, 1814, 1820 and 1860. Similar lists are found for Somerset County for the following years 1796, 1800, 1807, 1814, 1839, and 1854. Taxpayers and residents for Fulton County are also listed and include the following years 1773, 1774, 1785, 1826 and 1838. Please note not all the lists of taxpayers are countywide but rather may represent tax lists for individual townships or towns.
